Primary teaching is one of the most dependable entries in the Green List’s teaching family: Tier 1, a nationally unified pay scale, and chronic demand. The only difference from secondary teaching is the age group and the name of the collective agreement: the immigration rules are identical.

Green List Position and Visa Pathway

Under INZ Appendix 13 (effective 9 March 2026), these teaching occupations sit on Tier 1 (Straight to Residence):

The requirement is a single line: registration with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, plus a provisional or full practising certificate. Meet that, hold a compliant job offer, and you can apply for residence directly.

A contrast worth noting: Early Childhood teachers (241111), Special Education teachers and TESOL teachers are on Tier 2: they need 24 months of New Zealand work first. If you are choosing a teaching specialisation, this difference changes your timeline by two years.
