Frequently asked questions
- Which tax year does this calculator use?
- The 2026-27 tax year (1 April 2026 – 31 March 2027): income tax brackets of 10.5% / 17.5% / 30% / 33% / 39%, ACC earner's levy of 1.75% (capped at $156,641 of income) and a student loan repayment threshold of $24,128 per year. All parameters come from IRD publications and are date-stamped on this page.
- Why is my actual payslip slightly different?
- This tool uses the standard M tax code. It does not apply the IETC credit (ME code), secondary-job codes, child support, payroll giving, or one-off lump-sum rules. Employers also round per pay period. Expect small differences — the annual totals should be very close.
- Is KiwiSaver deducted before or after tax?
- KiwiSaver employee contributions are calculated on your gross pay and deducted from your after-tax pay — they do not reduce your taxable income. Your employer's 3% contribution is on top of your salary and is not shown here.
- Do migrants on a work visa pay the same tax?
- Yes. PAYE applies the same way to work visa holders as to residents. Non-resident seasonal workers (RSE scheme) use a flat 10.5% rate instead — a special case not covered here.
