How this estimate is built
  • Rent = city median weekly rent × 52 ÷ 12, anchored to MBIE tenancy bond data and Trade Me Rental Price Index (2025–2026).
  • Utilities combine power, water and internet; a shared-flat room uses a per-person share.
  • Frugal = home cooking only; Comfortable = groceries plus regular eating out. Children are costed per school-age child.
  • Public transport = monthly adult fares (children ride free or discounted in most NZ cities); Car = fuel + insurance + maintenance + WOF per household.
  • Not included: childcare, school fees, health insurance, visa fees, savings and one-off setup costs (bond, furniture).

Estimates are medians for planning purposes only. Actual costs vary by suburb, provider and personal habits. Not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the rent data come from?
Weekly median rents anchored to MBIE Tenancy Services bond-lodgement data and the Trade Me Rental Price Index (2025–2026), converted to monthly figures at 52 weeks ÷ 12. Other categories are editorial estimates based on Stats NZ household expenditure data, Education NZ / NauMai NZ guides and official public-transport fares. Everything is reviewed quarterly.
How accurate is the estimate for me personally?
Treat it as a planning baseline, not a quote. Real spending varies widely with suburb, building condition and personal habits — a room in a shared Auckland flat can differ by NZ$150+/week between suburbs. The "frugal vs comfortable" toggle covers the most common range.
Does the family estimate include childcare or school costs?
No. Childcare in New Zealand is a major expense (often NZ$250–400/week for under-5s before subsidies) and varies too much by age and provider to fold into a median. School-age children in state schools are largely covered by the food and misc lines.
How much money does INZ require me to show?
For a student visa, INZ currently requires evidence of NZ$20,000 per year for living costs (plus tuition). Work and resident visas assess income instead. Use this calculator to sanity-check those official thresholds against real city-level budgets.
