PTE vs IELTS for New Zealand Immigration: Which Is Easier?

For New Zealand skilled residence you must prove English ability, and for most applicants that means a test. The two most popular choices are IELTS (General or Academic — both accepted) and PTE Academic. Here is how they actually differ, what the visa requires, and how the scores convert.

Two rules catch people out: results must be no more than 2 years old when you apply, and the test must be sat in person at a test centre — home editions are not accepted.
Format differences that actually matter
PTE Academic is fully computer-based and AI-scored. You speak into a microphone in a room with other candidates, type your essays, and get results typically within 48 hours. There is no human examiner, which removes both the anxiety and the rapport of a live conversation.
IELTS gives you a choice of paper or computer for three sections, but Speaking is always a live interview with a human examiner. Results take longer (typically 3–5 days on computer, 13 days on paper).
People who think in templates and type fast tend to prefer PTE. People whose speaking is stronger than their writing, or who dislike talking to a screen, often do better on IELTS.
How the scores convert
Pearson published an updated concordance in July 2025 (for the enhanced PTE Academic). Key anchor points for overall scores:

Note the subtlety: IELTS 6.5 concords with PTE 55–62, but INZ’s SMC minimum is PTE 58 — inside that range. INZ sets its own lines per test; the concordance is a guide, not the rule. Check any score combination with our Score Converter.
Older conversion tables still circulating online (PTE 58–64 = IELTS 6.5, PTE 65 = 7.0) come from Pearson’s 2020 study and are superseded. If a migration agent quotes them, ask which concordance year they are using.
So which should you take?
- Take PTE if you want fast results, prefer typing, or get nervous with examiners.
- Take IELTS if you want a human speaking partner, paper-based option, or already have IELTS preparation materials.
- Take TOEFL iBT only if you already have a strong TOEFL score — it converts fine, but preparation resources for migration purposes are thinner.
- Already have a valid score under 2 years old? Check whether it clears the line before booking anything new.

- Is PTE easier than IELTS?

- Does INZ use the Pearson conversion table?
- No. INZ sets its own minimum scores per test. The Pearson and ETS concordance tables are statistical equivalences — useful for comparing your scores, but the visa requirement is the number INZ publishes.
- Can I take the test online from home?
- No. INZ only accepts tests sat in person at a test centre. 'At home' versions are not acceptable, and results must be no more than 2 years old when you apply.
